The Canyoning since in 1970 in Europe, more precisely in France and Spain, by cavers looking for caves in the Pyrenees canyons, between rivers and gorges, without imagining that they were creating another adventure sport.

In the 1980s this nature sport arrived in mainland of Portugal, by Fancísco Silva who, with a group of friends, opened the first Canyon routes in the Portuguese continent.

This sport arrived in the Azores in 1992, by Luís Paulo Bettencourt, who started the practice of Canyoning on the island of São Jorge. In 2000 he founded Aventour Azores Adventures, which like him are the pioneers of Canyoning in the Azores.

It is undoubtedly the most rewarding way to discover pure and unspoilt nature, covering the many water courses that the island of São Jorge offers for the practice of Canyoning in the Azores. It is also a different way of getting to know the insides of the island, enjoying the most beautiful we have: "Wild Nature".
